Villagers stop Koraput admn’s work related to tourism project

Koraput: An attempt by the district administration to excavate soil at Thuria under Pottangi tehsil for a proposed tourism project on Saturday was met with resistance by villagers who feared a reduction in the land they use for cattle grazing.The excavation was required to collect soil samples for laboratory testing as part of the project’s preliminary assessment. However, with the situation turning unfavourable, officials were forced to leave the site without completing the work.Pottangi tehsildar DBS Dharua clarified that the project is part of an integrated tourist development plan for Deomali.According to the tehsildar, as part of the proposal, around Rs 24 crore will be invested in setting up an experience centre at Thuria. Tourists visiting Deomali will be required to park their vehicles at this facility and travel to the hilltop using transport arranged by the administration.The project also includes the development of a souvenir centre at the site, along with basic amenities such as rest sheds and toilets.The govt has around 20 acres of land at the location, of which, only about four acres are required for the project. “Soil testing is necessary for this purpose and we had gone to collect samples. However, due to resistance from villagers, the work could not be carried out,” Dharua said.He added that efforts would be made to engage with the villagers and address their concerns.Thuria is located about 5km from the Deomali hilltop, the highest peak in Odisha and a major tourist attraction in the state.
